My go-to Chinese food place! The food is always good and they have great service and fast delivery.

After moving back and realizing that my old Chinese spot is now known by everyone there is a noticeable difference in the quality of food has taken a nose dive. The chicken wings got smaller, general tso has gotten mushy, and beef sticks are in no way what they used to be. Fried rice is still a go though!

I'm giving it four stars, but at the same time I've found that this is the best Chinese food in Silver Spring - so on a SS-area scale, it's five stars. They have an extensive menu will all the Chinese-American favorites, plus some 'healthy' interpretations. (Note: if you get the 'healthy white meat' General Tso's it will _not_ be fried - it will be steamed chicken with Tso's sauce on the side - you've been warned!) I've really enjoyed the moo shu chicken/pork a few times and my experiences with other dishes have ranged from decent to great. This will probably be my standby Chinese delivery place in the area.

The food is good and they have an extensive menu. I have had better shrimp with garlic sauce though. They don't have itemized receipts though and will try to overcharge you so be very mindful of that. I like that they have combination dinner specials that actually include shrimp with garlic sauce or boneless spareribs.

surprisingly good - bit pricier, but worth it. tasted fresh, presentation was great - had the veggie TVP "chicken" General Tso, fried veggie dumplings, and veggie TVP "chicken" Singapore noodles. all tasty and MUCH less post-chinese bloat feeling than my staples at Spring Garden. Delivery was reasonable time. Annoying that their site - which has the menu, doesn't have their number - yelp to the rescue! I'll be ordering Golden House - despite the look from the street - when the craving hits next time.

We've ordered from here twice and been happy. Quick delivery (site says 45-60 minutes but we got it in 30 at 5:00 on a Saturday). Egg rolls were good--although maybe vegetarian? they don't specify--as was the won ton soup. We tried Szechuan chicken, General Tso's, and Kung pao shrimp. My 5-year-old son actually ate the broccoli out of the General Tso's, so I'd call that a win. Would have liked a little more rice with the entrees, and a little less celery/water chestnuts in the shrimp. Otherwise, good and affordable, and I like the convenience of being able to order online.

Just got my first delivery order, and I'm a fan. It was delivered impossibly fast; ordered on grubhub and the driver buzzed my door LESS than 20 minutes later. They have an impressive assortment of vegetarian dishes -- I got the orange vegetarian chicken and it was quite good. I liked that it came with brown rice too. The "vegetarian roll" was just alright - not the best spring roll around, but not terrible. Fine to push the order over delivery minimum when ordering for one. I look forward to ordering from here again.

Ordered delivery from here for the first time yesterday. I usually opt for Mayflower but we wanted to try some "vegan" options Golden House offered that other Chinese restaurants don't. First off, the fastest delivery I've ever experienced. I got the email receipt at 6:05 PM and they were here before 6:30 PM. Granted, they are less than a mile away (0.7 according to the web site, when you place the order), but most delivery places around here are less than a mile or so away and you can expect it to take closer to an hour or slightly longer. Having delivery in less than a half hour is unheard of. Amazing! Veggie steamed dumplings were the best I've ever had. I may just order 20 of these next time, with the intentions of having leftovers for a 2nd (possibly 3rd) meal. Rice Noodle / Veggie Lo Mein was great. Better than regular Lo Mein. Onion Rings were tasty -- comparable to Burger King, so nothing special, but they were a solid, munchie snack.

EXPENSIVE DOG FOOD. I stopped in to Golden House, hungry for Chinese and remembering it was good some years ago. I ordered Beef Broccoli and shrimp toast. The shrimp toast was by far the worst I ever had -- 4 greasy, burned little pathetic toast quarters with mystery 'meat' filling. Thought the beef might be better. I drove home (about 20 min) and was not surprised to find it was no longer hot. No biggie, but parts of the broccoli were refrigerator cold -- and it's June! It clearly was not even heated thoroughly. The brown gravy had a 1/4 inch layer of grease floating on the top. I ate just a bit before giving the rest to my dog. I think she enjoyed it.

We called it Bad East Coast Chinese Food #BECCF way back when. It was that take-out/delivery Chinese food from the hole-in-the-wall take-out place that had the old van seat opposite the counter for customers to use while they waited for their order to be finished. Golden House was the best in the area. Period. 20+ years seems to have taken a toll (and a couple stars) from the experience Golden House provided its customers. Sadness. :*-( The current location for the restaurant is better than what they had before at the intersection of Fenton & Wayne. They have tables and matching seats where customers can sit down and eat. There is a lot more traffic on Georgia Avenue, so the greater visibility should add to the flow of customers. The parking lot is actually paved: Bonus! Unfortunately, it's a shared parking lot, so the Seven-Eleven and Enterprise Rental cars and customers take up most of the space. Or, maybe it's the consulate down the side street. Maybe it's the corset store across the side street. Not sure, but if you drive to this location you may need to search for a parking space. The food is mostly Blah. There was an extra greasy feeling. Not the normal greasy feeling one might have grown up loving. No, it's the adult, what did I just swallow, greasy feel. The flavors seemed to be absent or buried. Either way, it left a lot to be desired. I'll give them some time and come back for another try, for now though I will not be able to walk away smiling.

I'm a sucker for some good Chinese take out but this place had terrible food. The lobster fried rice didn't have any lobster - only over cooked crawfish. It was pretty flavorless and didn't seem to be "fried" rice - more like steamed rice. The chicken lomein was also pretty bland. I realize it is supposed to be a healthier alternative to your typical Chinese take out but who wants flavorless food even if it's healthier? Not me.

Somehow I got this confused with Golden China, which I love. Well, I will continue to buy from Golden China because these guys didn't turn out so well for me. The main dishes of lo mien and shrimp dish was fine. However, the cheesecake bites were expired. They were sour and 2 of the 4 were molded. Yuck! :( But the worst part was the driver. I was called super earlier than expected and all he said in broken English was, "Did you order?" I replied, "Yes." And he hung up on me. So..I figured that it was the restaurant that called me basically just confirming the phone number. Then 20 minutes later I get an angry call from the driver, raising his voice at me, telling me he's here and to come down to the lobby. This misunderstanding would of NEVER happened if he hadn't just hung up on me and explained my food was ready and he was here, downstairs. Just rude.

Golden house is the ONLY chinese food place that has never given me a stomach ache. Their food lacks the fatty oil that is common place to Chinese food places. Their ingredients are obviously fresh, and you can tell it tastes much better. The food lasts a while. My go to order is a combo place with pork fried rice and boneless spare ribs. This meal last me three meals...at $10 for a combo plate, that's an amazing deal. Fresh food...lots of food...and super fast delivery. Yes it may cost an extra buck but it is worth far more than that!

  • Nicolas H.

Horrible, if I could give this place 0 stars I would. I ordered House Special Low Mein. It just had an overpowering fishy flavor, but the real turn off was the overpowering flavor of turned oil in the Egg Rolls. I couldn't help but think that they have never properly cleaned their fryer, in like ... ever ...

Wow. Just...wow. I am the self-proclaimed official Yelp Chinese Carryout Connoisseur. I went to this place because I couldn't bring myself to eat one of the hot dogs from the Kwik-E-Mart (7-Eleven) next door. Even though there's some unwritten law that requires all chinese food places to take on one of eight names (Yum's, Golden House, Dannys, etc), this place actually lives up to its name. Granted, I only had the wings with fried rice, I still give them four stars for the execution. At first glance, the rice looked like the usual bland food court rice from the mall. Then the Food Network wanna-be came out of me. "These cuts of carrot...they aren't uniform. Neither are the onions. Wait a minute. Someone did this by hand!" By George, this wasn't prepackaged mixed vegetables thrown in like the crap at the mall. Someone made this stuff themselves. Like Robert Frost once said, "And that has made all the difference." The wings were great, the rice was good enough to eat without soy sauce. I was very pleased.

  • Renee B.

Inexpensive and quick for delivery or take out. Best takeout/delivery Chinese in Silver Spring. For dining in: the food is good but atmosphere not so much. Usually someone begging to use the restroom. And limited parking due to Mattress Warehouse having a gazillion parking spaces but no customers.

Super good! I'm always hesitant to try a new Chinese place, because they're so hit or miss, and I've rarely found good Chinese food in the DC area. I saw Golden House received good reviews, though, so I gave it a try and have so far not been disappointed. Their General Tso's Chicken is great and their fried rice is awesome, too. Steamed dumplings are doughy, but really good, too.

I USE TO LOVE GOLDEN HOUSE. This carryout was my family's go to Chinese carryout. Last night I ordered a small shrimp fried rice. Half way through my meal I discovered a long strand of black hair (I have medium sized locs). I called Golden House to inform them and they were very understanding, apologized and delivered my meal again in like 30 minutes. I decided to have it for lunch today and guess what..ANOTHER STRAND OF LONG BLACK HAIR. How does someone mess up twice? Either way, I'm done with this place now. Dag it!

I am so down with this restaurant. I'm a vegetarian and there are TONS of options. The faux chicken is great. If you've ever had the nuggets from the pre-prepared area of Whole Foods it's the same type. There was no oil overload and the flavor was great. I have only ever ordered delivery through GrubHub and have not been into the actual restaurant. The delivery time will be off, for some reason it gives you the current time, but it isn't too long.

My household has a favorite go-to place for Chinese delivery but decided to let go for a change and try something new. We decided to go with this place based on the reviews on Yelp. It was a Wednesday night and we needed to order something quick and weren't able to pick up fpod. I had the flu and could barely move. At least my taste buds were still intact. My partner was going to be home a little late and delivery was our only option. So I thought, Chinese.... I could get soup! We ordered shrimp with broccoli and a large wonton soup to share. I ordered on the phone. They were friendly and easy to work with. I was impressed with their vegetarian/vegan menu and if I wasn't sick probably would have ordered something from this menu. But I really just wanted soup and to sample whatever my partner was ordering. The food arrived fairly quick. And the food was still piping hot. The wonton soup was pretty good. Probably one of the better soups I have had, but the broth itself was a tad bland. The shrimp and broccoli wasn't bad but not the best. Smothered in too much sauce and the shrimp wasn't de-veined which urks me. Regardless, I rated the overall food experience 3. Not the best, not the worst. Service was good. Prices were good. Otherwise, EH. I think I will be sticking to my usual place.

It was not as good as I expected. I went to get my hair done on Georgia Ave and a few of the stylists said Golden House won best General Tsao's out of restaurants in the DC area, some award. I decided to come back and try it. We ordered: Crab Rangoons (3 stars) - too sweet in the center compared to other Chinese restaurants in the area, I did not enjoy them as much and would not order them again General Tsaos - 3.5 stars, it wasn't too special, it was edible, but not anything to give an award out. Chicken Pad Thai - I know its a Chinese restaurant but we were curious - 2 stars, not at all like Pad Thai, flavorless and blah (get Pad Thai at Charm Thai down the block) Fried Rice (3 stars) I have had better Chinese takeout in this area. I prefer the Dim Sum restaurant next to the Giant and the Caribou coffee place much more.

These people will never get my money again. By the way, they swear they are nit on yelp and maybe I had the wrong chinese restaurant. Im not sure they realize their picture is on the yelp page! Ive been ordering from them for years and they forgot to bring my order. /the young lady is very rude and comfortable. I had to go all the way to this restaurant which is only 5 minutes just to prove to them I placed an order. I will hope Yelp removes them once I call in the Morning to get my money back.

Lots of options, relatively inexpensive and fast. However, I have found a hair in my food more than once. If you scroll through the other reviews, you will notice multiple mentions of people finding hair in their food.

Working in Silver Spring in an area where I'm inbetween Wheaton Mall and Downtown Silver Spring, so there is never really a chance of going out to eat with traffic and what not. But there is an abundant supply of restaurant that do deliver from pizza to Chinese. We usually go this place or Chin & Lee's but when Chin & Lee's delivery person was not satisfied with our tip and called us cheap we said screw Chin & Lee. We love Golden House for the fact that their produce are always fresh and it taste fresh...as well as their meats. They also offer a "diet" menu that consist of steamed chicken &/or shrimp and vegetables. They have a great lunch special for 5.75 you get your meat, vegetables, rice and an egg roll. I usually hate calling in orders for Chinese restaurants but the staff at Golden House are easy to understand, patient, give you exact price. I must also add that their delivery time is awesome and always makes it in time right before lunch. I'm also iffy on eating shrimp for delivery but I've only had one bad experience where the shrimp tasted too fishy. I called them in and they offered my next order on them. So thumbs up to Golden House and their impeccable service.

The fact that there's something sort of forlorn about the design of various Golden House restaurants I've wandered unthinkingly by -- they're standalone yellow a-frame buildings, generally found adrift in slopey, crumbly parking lot somewhere -- turned me off from trying them for a long time. But one particular feature lured me in one night: unlike 99.99999% of the rest of boring Silver Spring, they're open late. So I wandered in and bought a pair of vegetarian eggrolls one night and... quality. I'm pretty sure they don't use MSG, but they may very well use some sort of opiate, because I was hooked. The problem with the vegetarian eggrolls is that they rarely survive me driving one-handed out of the parking lot, and they never survive to see the next block. The Vegetable Fried Rice, Chow Mein, or Szechuan Bean Curd survive the drive home, but they don't last long in my apartment. The staff is friendly and accommodating, and they joke around with each other in rapid-fire Chinese. I have no idea what they're talking about but I find myself smiling and wishing I did. Anyway... fun place + reasonable prices + good food = check it out. UPDATE! They moved. They're now in a rather run-of-the-mill strip mall next to an army recruiter on Georgia. But it's easier to move around in there. Also, I don't think they stay open so late any more.

It'll do the job for delivery Chinese food. Not great, but not bad. Delivery is fast. Their online menu has the word organic on the front of it, but I wouldn't believe that for a second.

  • Holly C.

Not world class Chinese, let's assess what we're looking at. Budget Chinese, that is Carryout/Delivery only in a strip mall. Hmmm...it's a not a four star restaurant folks but if you're hungry in a hurry it's just fine. Delivery is convenient and pretty quick. The menu is very large.

    (3)
  • Diane M.

Ordered Sweet and Sour Shrimp and Lobster Lo Mein. There was not one lick of Lobster in the Lo Mein. None. It was all crawfish. How can they false advertise like that? The sweet and sour shrimp is just beer battered shrimp with no pineapple or green pepper. The sauce was not that great either. I will never order from this place again. So sub standard.

Do not get delivery from here!! After a long day of holiday traveling and a 1 1/2 hour delay at the airport coming home, I was tired and hungry and wanted food delivered to me. I've eaten here several times; the food is fine...a step above your average "China Star" hole-in-the-wall take-out spot located in any strip mall. However, all of those other times, I have placed an order to go or for pick up. Tonight's delivery experience will have me only placing to go or pick up orders from now on. First, they said it would take 40 minutes for delivery. As it's a Monday night and not a hoppin Friday or Saturday, I thought that was a bit odd. But, I was ok with it. Over an hour later, I was about to call when they showed up. The delivery guy was unpleasant and not at all pleased about having business. (Ok, as there are a bajillion other Chinese food places in this area, I think you could be a bit more appreciative about having someone choose your restaurant!!) The food was barely lukewarm. I had to reheat everything...my egg drop soup, my crab rangoons, the General Tso chicken and the lo mein. Reheating food that hasn't even been eaten yet is not on my list of things I look for in delivery from a restaurant. I give this place 3 stars for the food; 1 star for delivery, so 2 stars overall. Save yourself the trouble and order delivery from some place else!!

After receiving their menu in the mail I was curious to try this place because it's the only place I've seen that serves Kung Pao Shrimp besides PF Chang's. Also, the cover of the menu states "Organic", but I am not really sure that can be backed up. They also have a shared parking lot, so it is easy to get take out in a hurry. The dining room atmosphere is very much to look at. There was a couple dining in, but most of the lunch time folks, like me, were getting their food to go. I ordered a pint of the Kung Pao Shrimp and didn't have to wait very long. I live nearby and made a quick stop at Rite Aid on the way home. Upon arrival my food was still hot - nice! Well, I'd have to say that I still like PF Chang's better. The shrimp sauce was spicy enough to make my nose run, but I and sort of a purist. I don't like a lot of chopped celery and carrots in my food. There were about seven large shrimps though. I probably won't order that again. Shrimp with cashews is always my standby. The ladies at the counter aren't the most congenial. Don't try to ask them any questions about the menu. Just order off the expansive menu and be on your way.

Just based on Delivery. If you are a veg,or would like to try some healthy minded food, and like home made Seitan, Give this place a try, awesome. Best veg delivery, hands down. Very nice folks to deal with as well, we have yet to have a problem. Delivery times vary, usually about an hour, though if you plan ahead, it is perfect.

My roommate and I discovered this place during the crazy snowstorm last winter that had the city shut down for days. We were out exploring, smelled Chinese food, and we found Golden House! Went inside and were pleasantly surprised by their extensive vegan menu (mock meat too) all served with brown rice. I always get food to go because the atmosphere of the restaurant leaves something to be desired, but the food is great. I used to live close by and always took advantage of their free delivery service, the food always arrived hot. My recommendation: vegetarian curry chicken and vegetable spring rolls. Amazing! (Portions are big, so I always have lunch for the next day too!)

My go to delivery and take out Chinese place here in silver spring. I usually get the Singapore rice noodles which come in a huge portion!!! One downside is the dish is sometimes a hit or miss. I would order pick up so it is fresh when you get it!

My favorite Chinese restaurant in the Silver Spring area hands down. If your not looking for anything fancy and want good Chinese food this is the place I choose. If your a vegetarian the menu has many options and the food overall tastes great. I noticed the fried rice is one of the best I've had and love the TSO's chicken. Overall you can't go wrong dine in or take out give them a try.

Ordered delivery once and was quite unimpressed. It looked like food was cooked yesterday: it had strange stale taste. I haven't tried my luck with them again since there are number of other Chinese restaurants around. It is interesting that average ratings for this place are definitely higher than what I experienced.

MY husband and I have been looking for decent Chinese delivery in Silver Spring. We have found that in Golden House. The chicken with mango is really yummy. And the singapore rice noodles spicy. We also liked the spicy brocolli. The menu is varied with a large healthy vegetarian section. Portions are generous. Delivery timely. All in all a good experience.

Not as Gloriously Bad as It Used to be! Since the converted Little Tavern that Golden House had occupied for years was torn down- they've moved to 8200 Georgia Ave. and they haven't had time to collect years of grease on the equipment and windows. The floor isn't as dirty as it used to be either. Unfortunately the Shrimp Toast (which is the only thing I order there) isn't as good either. Sigh. now has seating. I marked good for kids- just to let you know- I hate kids in restaurants- My only hope is that the essentials of Golden House remain- and the little beggers get sick.

I've had good Chinese food and I've had bad Chinese food, but this is the first time I've ever had inedible Chinese food. This went into the trash minutes after making the ungodly mistake of taking the plastic lids off the moderately sized portions of 'food'. The General Tso's Chicken was extremely misrepresented on the menu, likely breaking at least 7 of the 10 commandments. In the extremely rare instances that there was actually meat between the flavorless and artificial mush-like breading, the 'meat' was either translucent or shades of unhealthy looking greys and blacks, indicating that no chicken was actually used in this dish. Even the sauce tasted like rotted orange juice thickened with corn starch. Similarly, the Teriyaki Chicken was nothing more than salted strips of chicken fat and skin. I assume here that they needed to use actual chicken since there is not coating of mush to hide it in, so they simply use the parts of the animal that most average individuals would carve off and toss in the trash. I would have taken pictures of these dishes, but I was worried that if I left the cover off for even another minute that it would mutate into some sort of creature that would wreak havok upon my apartment. Needless to say, I will not be wasting my money here again. The Good: The fried rice alone was edible, on par with what you would expect to be served in a hospital cafeteria - a free government run hospital - in an extremely underdeveloped third world country. Also, the delivery arrived in only about 20 minutes, I assume because the delivery man drives around with pre-made food rotting in the trunk along with the decomposing corpses of taste, flavor, and hygiene.

This is definitely the best Chinese takeout I've ever had. Our office orders this at least once a week. The food is hot, fresh, properly cooked and the delivery is crazy fast. It's consistently good no matter what we order. The lunch specials are a ton of food for just around $6; you get an entree, fried rice and an egg roll. It's always our first choice when we're on a budget.

First experience was very odd, hence only 3 starts. I ordered this for delivery and when the food arrvived, the delivery guy was very concerned about my washing machine? He was looking in my apartment and saying something about my stackable washer and dryer. However, I couldn't understand what he was saying becasue he was mumbling. I still have no idea what he was talking about. I have since ordered from here (with the same delivery guy) and there hasn't been a problem. General Tso's is solid. You can select the level of spice you would like which is always a nice option for those who can't handle too much. Medium spice just has a slight kick to keep you coming back for more. The dumplings aren't great, but maybe I'll try the friend next time versus the steamed. It seems as though the dumpling wasn't cooked all the way through. The crab ragoon has actually crab and isn't just loaded with cream cheese and I loved their eggroll. Will probably order from them soon.

Just awful. We've ordered here before and thought it was ok, but our most recent order was a parade of horribles. We ordered two meals and an appetizer. The chicken dish from their "healthy menu" consisted of flat rubbery white sheets that weren't even recognizable as chicken. We received white rice instead of the brown rice we expected, per their menu. And the worst part was the appetizer and other main dish both included chicken, when we clearly ordered vegetarian dishes. Total dealbreaker for the vegetarian with us. To the restaurant's credit, they acknowledged the mistake when we called and resent the delivery guy with a new main dish (no sauce though) - but never apologized or sounded remotely sorry about the mishaps. Never again.

Greetings People Of The DMV!!! Golden House provides an excellent selection of food for all the meat eaters AND the vegetarians!!! WOW can't believe it... The owners of this Chinese restaurant went all out for everyone's business...Most Chinese restaurants dine-in or carryout will alter their dishes for the vegetarian population, however they give the vegetarians their own menu!!! Everything you like, sweat and sour chicken, Mongolian beef, beef and broccoli, etc...almost all your favorite Chinese dishes are made using vegetarian meats...I SAY TRY IT!!!! Excellent food and very large portions. If you are thinking about letting go of the swine/chicken or cow I would recommend this place first!!! The prices may seem high, but for the large portion they serve I can't complain. I've tried: veg. Mongolian beef, veg. orange chicken, and veg. kung pao chicken. All come with brown rice, kind of a letdown, does not really go with the meal, fried rice is a must with Chinese food!!! The owners need to rethink the brown rice thing, maybe offer it as a substitute but fried rice is a MUST, and will cost you extra...Everything is well seasoned and no nasty vegetarian meat after taste!!!

No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes.
